DIVERSITY IN ASSET MANAGEMENT
A qualitative study of the experience of female professionals in South Africa.
Ms Caroline Henry is the Chairman of the EPPF Board. She has held various executive, non-executive and independent roles within Eskom, RMB, the EPPF and Sun International. Caroline has extensive experience in strategy, investment management and treasury management. She holds a BCom, BAcc (Hons) and CA(SA).
Mr Musa Mabesa is the Principal Executive Officer of the Government Employees Pension Fund since November 2020. He is a seasoned finance professional with over 19 years’ experience. Musa previously worked for multiple private and public sector institutions including EOH, SAICA and the AGSA. He holds a Master of Science and a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting Science. He is a qualified Chartered Certified Accountant, is a fellow of the Salzburg Global Seminar and a member of the Institute of Directors of Southern Africa.
Ms Anne Cabot-Alletzhauser is the Practice Director and Co-Founder of the Responsible Finance Initiative at the Gordon Institute of Business Science. It's a role that perfectly combines her professional skills: 40 years in asset management and finance, with her academic training and passion: Developmental Anthropology. Previously, Anne headed up the Alexander Forbes Research Institute. She also spent 32 years managing pension fund assets in various countries. In 1992, she moved to South Africa and pioneered the development of the multi-manager management approach of pension fund management.
Ms Thandie Mashego joined the EPPF in February 2022 as Chief Financial Officer and has a wealth of experience in finance and investment management. She previously served as CFO of WDB Investment Holdings, CFO of Vantage Capital Group and has held various senior roles at the Industrial Development Corporation. She also served as a non-executive director on the boards of several entities throughout her career. Thandie is a Chartered Accountant and holds various qualifications, including a Master of Business Leadership.
Dr Anthony Costa is the Investment Lead in the Private Office of the President of South Africa, where he is responsible for the President’s Investment Mobilisation Programme. He is on full-time secondment from Nedbank, where he has held various roles, including in the broader Old Mutual Group, for over 15 years. Anthony holds BA(Hons) and LLB degrees from Wits University, an MBA from the Gordon Institute of Business Studies (University of Pretoria), and a PhD in History from the University of Cambridge (Trinity College). He is an admitted advocate and former member of the Johannesburg Bar.
Ms Grace Chauke has more than 16 years financial services experience. She has a Bsc Degree in Mathematical Statistics and she’s a Chartered Financial Analyst level 3 candidate. She started her career at Alexander Forbes as an Actuarial Assistant and then worked for companies such as NMG Actuaries and Consultants, RMBAM and the Export Credit Insurance Corporation of South Africa where she was an Investment Specialist before joining Transport Sector Retirement Fund as an Investment Officer.
Mr Phathutshedzo Mabogo is a Deputy Chief Investment Officer at the EPPF with primary responsibility for the Private Markets portfolios. He has previously overseen the Listed Equities, Listed Properties and Fixed Income portfolios. Phathutshedzo has completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Actuarial Science with Wits University. He then acquired a Chartered Financial Analyst through the CFA Institute. He also holds a Master of Business Administration.
Ms Sonja Saunderson has more than 20 years’ experience in investment management, including shaping investment philosophy and processes. She joined the EPPF as Chief Investment Officer in November 2022 from Momentum Metropolitan Holdings. Sonja held various roles as a lecturer in Mathematics and Statistics, a Quantitative Analyst, Head of Research and Product Development as well as Chief Investment Officer. Sonja holds various qualifications including an MCom (Cum Laude) in Statistics and Economics.
Mr Shafeeq Abrahams joined the EPPF in September 2018 as the Chief Financial Officer until he was appointed as the Chief Executive and Principal Officer effective 1 April 2021. He began his career at Deloitte and later joined Eskom, where he held various leadership roles in Finance. Prior to joining the EPPF, he was the CFO of the National Home Builders Registration Council. He holds a BCompt Honours Degree in Accounting, CA(SA) and a Master of Business Leadership.
Ms Muitheri Wahome is the founder of the Asset Management Research Institute. She is the author of Building Capital – a history of asset management in South Africa. Muitheri is a financial services professional with 26 years of experience. After starting out as an insurance sector analyst at Barnard Jacobs Mellet, Wahome joined Alexander Forbes Asset Consultants. She later joined Alexander Forbes Investments (previously Investment Solutions) as head of technical solutions, going on to serve as chief client officer of the firm.
Ms Nzinga Qunta is a business news anchor with over a decade of experience in radio and television. She is currently anchoring the SABC News’ flagship business news bulletin “OnPoint” with interviews and insights from around the world. Nzinga is a seasoned moderator who facilitates high level conferences, events and seminars with a focus on business, entrepreneurship, innovation, education and tech.
